ينتمي هذا الكتاب إلى نوع السيرة الذاتية حيث تخبر الكاتبة اللبنانية الأميركية سيلانة رحمه قصة حياتها: رحلتها من مسقط رأسها، بلدة عيناتا عند سفح القرنة السوداء، إلى مدينة بوسطن الأميركية حيث حطّت الرِّحال مع عائلتها مطلع القرن.
بيد أن الكتاب يتخطى أدب السيرة الذاتية ليحلّ ضيفاً صادقاً، أميناً ومنفتحاً على أدب التأملات: ها الكاتبة المخضرمة تطل من أعلى قمة في بلاد الأرز، القرنة السوداء، على مشكلات العصر وأزمات الوطن السوداء، بعد أن عانقت عيناها، طفلةً، تلك القمة فرفدتها صخورها المتجبِّرة بالعزم ورياحها العاتية بالحلم وهواؤها النظيف بالصدق.
لا تخجل سيلانة بفقرها: "بالغرفة الصغيرة الوحيدة التي كانت بيتنا: هنا ابتدعت أمي موائد شهيّة تجعلنا نتعالى على الجراح، ناظرين إلى الحياة نظرة الأقوياء المكافحين"؛ بالعمل المضني في الحقول؛ بحصاد القمح والحمص والعدس؛ برعي القطعان.
إلاّ أن الفقر جعلها تبحث عن "البطلة فيها"، أن تقدّها من صخر القسوة وتصقلها على أسنّة الحرمان: بطلة ليست من بطانة الإقطاعي المرقُطة عباءته (بزَّته الميليشياوية فيما بعد) بعرق جبين الفقراء ودم الأبرياء، ولا من تلك القماشة المنسولة من بارود، قماشة الكاوبوي الأفّاق على أرصفة الحضارة ومعارج الأصالة، بل بطلة مسلَّحة بالعلم والمعرفة والوعي للإنتفاض على الطغيان؛ هي القوة المستنيرة السَّمِحة في وجه القوة الغاشمة المستبيحة.
وها البطلة الفقيرة تدخل عالم كبار القوم، مدرسة بزونسون - بعبدات، شاهرةً ذهب العقل في وجه ذهب الجيب، وتمضي تعارك الحياة لتتخرِّج من الجامعة اللبنانية أستاذة أدب عربي تعمل بلا كلل على إستخراج ألماسة البطولة في تلاميذها الذين قضت الحرب على مسيس أحلامهم ونفيسها.
وفي بوسطن يتحول أدب السيرة والتأملات إلى أدب مهجر بإمتياز: هنا تسطِّر الأدبية العصامية مقارنات فريدة بين التجربة الأميركية الفذّة المتّكنة على عصا الإختبار، والتجربة اللبنانية والعربية المعرَّشة على صولجان الشعار.
أدب مهجري لا يزال حنينه يتهجّى حلماً: لكم لبنانكم، ولي لبناني.
