كتاب بدائع السلك في طبائع الملك، من الكتب المهمة في علم السياسة، وعلم الاجتماع السياسي، ومؤلفه من كبار مفكري الإسلام، ذلك هو أبو عبد الله بن الأزرق، الفقيه، العالم، البليغ، الأديب إمام وقته، وقاضي الجماعة، الذي لخص في كتابه، كلام ابن خلدون في مقدمة تاريخية كتاب العبر، وزاد عليه كثيراً، وخطا في ذلك خطوات واسعة، ومازج بين نظرياته ونظريات ابن خلدون في الاجتماعي والسياسي، والسياسة، ومفكري الإسلام الآخرين الذين ذكرهم في كتابه، أمثال: المسعودي، والماوردي، والغزالي، والطرطوشي، وابن رضوان، لذلك فقد أضاف إلى علم الاجتماع السياسي والأخلاقي مصدراً جديداً، لا يقل أهمية عن مقدمة ابن خلدون، ومن هنا تأتي أهمية تصنيف هذا الكتاب.
قسم ابن الأزرق كتابه هذا تقسيماً منهجياً، بدأه بمقدمتين الأولى: في تقرير ما يوطن في النظر في الملك عقلاً، وقد ضمن هذه المقدمة عشرين سابقة. الثانية: في تمهيد أصول من الكلام في الملك شرعاً، وقد قسمها إلى عشرين سابقة. ثم قسم الكتاب بعد ذلك إلى أربعة كتب: الكتاب الأول: في حقيقة الملك والخلافة، وسائر أنواع الرياسة. الكتاب الثاني: في سبب وجود الملك وشروطه. الكتاب الثالث: فيما يطالب به السلطان، تشييداً لأركان الملك، وتأسيساً لقواعده. الكتاب الرابع: في عوائق الملك، وعوارضه. هذا وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً، أما عمل المحقق فيتجلى بـ: أولاً: تخريج الآيات القرآنية الكريمة، كما وردت في موضعها بالقرآن الكريم، ثانياً: تخريج الأحاديث النبوية الشريفة، ثالثاً: التعرف بالأعلام التي تقتضي التعريف، رابعاً: وضع فهارس عامة للآيات القرآنية، والأحاديث النبوية الشريفة والأعلام، خامساً: وضع فهرساً لمحتويات الكتاب.
