ولدت فدوى عبد الفتاح طوقان في قضاء نابلس في فلسطين العام 1917، في أسرة ثرية ومحافظة إلى حدّ التزمت مؤلفة من عشرة اولاد، وكانت في سن الخامسة عشرة من عمرها عندما تعرضت إلى موقف غيّر مجرى حياتها، فقد شاء حظها العاثر أن يشاهدها أحد معارف أسرتها، وهي تأخذ وردة فلّ من طالب مراهق في السادسة عشرة من عمرهن فأسرع الواشي إلى إخبار شقيقها الأرعن فقرر بأن تبقى فدوى حبيسة المنزل ورهينة الوحدة القاتلة.
وراحت فدوى تمضي وقتها في المطالعة الحرة، وقراءة دواوين الشعر التي كان يختارها لها شقيقها الشاعر إبراهيم طوقان، نظمت عشرات القصائد والمقطوعات الشعرية، فقررت أن ترسل واحدة منها إلى مجلة بيروتية اسمها (الأمالي) وحين وصلت القصيدة إلى المجلة احتفت بها أسرة التحرير، ما شجعها على إرسال قصيدة ثانية وثالثة.
وبعد هذا الإستقبال الطبيب، قرت النشر في أشهر مجلة أدبية، يومذاك، وهي مجلة (الرسالة) القاهرية، تنوعت موضوعاتها الشعرية بين النزعات الذاتية والوجدانية والوطنية، قالت الشعر الخليلي والشعر الحر، كانت قضية فلسطين الشهيدة، تصيغ جانباً هاماً من شعر فدوى بلون أحمر قان، كان شعر المقاومة عندها عنصراً أساسياً لا يكتمل وجهها الشعري دونه.
ثم إن بعض المشككّين في شاعرية فدوى كانوا يعتقدون أن شقيقها إبراهيم هو الذي ينظم لها القصائد فتوقعها بإسمها، فلمات مات إبراهيم في عام 1946، واستمرّت الشاعرة تطلع على الناس بقصائدها، أدرك المشككون أن فدوى لم تكن تختبئ وراء شبح إبراهيم...
