هو الشيخ حافظ بن أحمد الحكمي، أحد علماء أهل السنة والجماعة، وأحد أعلام شبه الجزيرة العربية. ينتسب إلى قبيلة حكم المعروفة والتي تتمركز في المخلاف السليماني، وتعود أصولهم إلى الحكم، أحد أبناء سعد العشيرة، وهو أحد أجداد العرب القحطانية. و"حافظ" هو اسمه، وليس المصطلح الحديثي المعروف (نسبة إلى الحديث النبوي). ولد في قرية السلام المسمى حاليا بالخمس ، التابعة لمدينة المضايا بجنوب منطقة جازان جنوب المملكة العربية السعودية في 24 رمضان سنة 1342 هـ ، ثم انتقل مع أسرته إلى قرية الجاضع التابعة لمدينة صامطة بنفس المنطقة. وإتسم منذ طفولته بالذكاء وسعة الحفظ،، وحرص على حفظ القرآن وبعض المتون العلمية في سن صغيرة. وحينما أتم سبع سنوات من العمر ألحقه والده هو وشقيقه الأكبر محمد بمدرسة لتعليم القرآن الكريم في قرية الجاضع، وفيها قرأ على مدرسه جزأين من القرآن، ثم أكمل حفظه وعمره لم يتجاوز الثانية عشرة. كما أتقن الكتابة والخط، واشتهر بحسن خطه وجماله. كما قام بقراءة وحفظ بعض كتب ومتون الحديث والتفسير والتوحيد والفقه والفرائض مع أخيه بمنزل والدهما، حيث لم يكن بالقرية عالم أو مدرسة تقوم بتعليم هذه العلوم.

هذا مختصر جليل نافع، عظيم الفائدة جم المنافع، يشتمل على قواعد الدين، ويتضمن أصول التوحيد الذى دعت إليه الرسل، وأنزلت به الكتب، لا نجاة لمن بغيره يدين، ويدل ويرشد إلي سلوك المحجة البيضاء، ومنهج الحق المستبين، شرحت فيه أمور الإيمان وخصاله، وما يزيل جميعه أو ينافي كماله، وذكرت فيه كل مسألة مصحوبة بدليلها، ليتضح أمرها وتتجلي حقيقتها ويبين سبيلها، واقتصرت فيه على مذهب أهل السنة والاتباع، وأهملت أقوالأهل الأهواء والابتداع، إذ هى لا تذكر إلا للرد عليها، وإرسال سهام السنة عليها، وقد تصدى لكشف عوارها الأئمة الأجلة، وصنفوا فى ردها وإبعادها المصنفات المستقلة، مع أن الضد يعرف بضده، ويخرج بتعريف ضابطه وحده، فإذا طلعت الشمس لم يفتقر النهار إلى استدلال، وإذا استبان الحق واتضح فما بعده إلا الضلال، ورتبته على طريقة السؤال، ليستيقظ الطالب وينتبه، ثم أردفه بالجواب الذى يتضح الأمر به ولا يشتبه.
