يعالج هذا الكتاب, في أحد عشر فصلا, مشكلة العلاقة بين الدين والعقل الحديث. ويجيب عن أسئلة هامة يطرحها كثيرون مثل: ماهو وضع الدين في عالمنا المعاصر: عالم الشك والحيرة والقلق والريبة؟ هل يمكن أن يبقي الدين بعد التقدم المذهل الذى حققه العلم..؟ هل تبقى النظره الدينية إلى العالم؟ هل يمكن القول بالغرضية أو الغائية, بعد ان رفضها العلم؟ ويجيب عن هذه الأسئلة بالإيجاب: نعم سوف يبقى الدين قائما ركنا أساسيا في حياة الانسان رغم الانتصارات العلمية الهائلة. وسوف تبقى أفكار دينية لاحصر لها, رغم شيوع التفكير العلمى بين المثقفين, بل وعامة الناس فالخبرة الدينية دفينة مطمورة في أعماق النفس البشرية, ويعتقد المؤلف ان الانسان قادر علي العيش في عالمين مختلفين: عالم عقلى يتميز بالتفكير العلمى ثم عالم الدين, عالم "الأزل"!. ومثل هذا الفهم يجعل الجانبين يلئمان في الانسان, ويبدد الكثير من الغيوم, ويزيل اللبس والغموض من أذهان الناس.
ومن هنا فقد ذهب النقاد إلى "و.ت. ستيس" احتل مكانة مرموقة بين فلاسفة العصر, عندما عرض أفكار جديدة, تدعو إلى التأمل, والاعجاب, والتفكير في وقت واحد, كما عرض أنه يعالج قطاعا عريضا من التاريخ العقلى للانسان, ويسير مع الثورة العملية التى بدأت في القرن السابع عشر حتى يومنا الراهن, مناقشا الأفكار الجديدة التى جاء بها العلم وما لها من آثار, ايجابا أو سلبا, علي الدين, والأخلاق, والفلسفة. وينتهى بمناقشة مشكلتين هامتين من مشكلاتنا الراهنة هما: مشكلة الحقيقة الدينية, ومشكلة الأخلاق أنه كتاب لاغنى عنه لأى مثقف.
