حين رست باخرة الشحن الصدئة في فانكوفر، وعلى منتها ماهيندان وخمسمئة بسريلانكا، اعتقد الأب الشاب أنّه وولده ابن الأعوام الستة سوف يتمكنان أخيراً من بدء حياة جديدة، لكن "مهاجري القارب" هؤلاء يُلقى بهم في أحد مراكز الإحتجاز بغية النظر في أمرهم وسط تكهّنات السلطات وعناوين الأخبار بأنّ بينهم أعضاء منظمة الفصالية مقاتلة مسؤولة عن عدد كبير من العمليات الإنتحارية، مما يجعل هؤلاء الإرهابيين تهديداً للأمن القومي الكندي، وحين يُخضع هؤلاء المهاجرون لإستجواب قايس، تساور ماهيندان الخشبية من أن يفضي التصرف اليائس الذي قام به في سريلانكا لتمويل نفقات الهروب، إلى تبديد فرصة حصوله وولده على اللجوء.
ليست "مهاجرو القارب" رواية مشوقة فحسب، بل هي أيضاً عمل يأتي في وقته ليوفر منظوراً يتيح فهم أزمة اللجوء الشائع الآن ويحرّض على التعاطف العميق مع اللاجئين.
