من أراد التصدي لوضع دراسة عن أهوار جنوب العراق من النواحي الإجتماعية والجغرافية والتاريخية والثقافية والإقتصادية، كان لزاماً عليه أن يدرس النواحي البيولوجية أو الإحيائية لهذه المسطحات المائية أو التي تسمى أيضاً بالبطائح أو المستنقعات (من نبات وحيوان)، لأنها عماد هذه الأهوار في مجالين مهمين هما الموارد الإقتصادية والسياحية لسكان هذه المنطقة.
إن الدافع الذي جعلني أن أقوم بهذه الدراسة لحيوانات الأهوار العراقية الجنوبية قلة المصادر العلمية، بل شحتها بشكل يجعل من يلج هذا الموضوع ليدرسه أو يطلب معلومات عنه إنما يركض وراء سراب ليس إلا، لذلك قررت أن أضع هذا الكتاب هو ضمن سلسلة (موسوعة حيوانات العراق) بعد أن صدر منها (كتاب اللبائن العراقية وكتاب الزواحف العراقية) بحيث يضم كل ما يتعلق بطيور ولبائن وأسماك وزواحف هذه الأهوار التي تشكل نسبة 90% من أهوار العراق الدائمة.
عند تتبعي لما صدر من مقالات ودراسات وبحوث وتقارير ونشرات وكتب عن أهوار العراق بشكل عام وأهوار الجنوب بخاصة لاحظت تذبذب المعلومات وعدم دقتها في دراسة هذه الحيوانات والخلط بين أسماؤها ومسمياتها المحلية والعلمية الصرفة.
كما أن معظم من كتب أو تناول هذه المنطقة من العراق بالدراسة والتحقيق كان يصطدم بعقبات كبيرة وهي ندرة المصادر كما أسلفنا، ونتيجة لذلك كانوا يتجاوزون البحث في الأمور البيولوجية (الإحيائية) ويتركون هذه المواضيع لآخرين، وبالتالي تبقى المكتبة العراقية على الدوام خالية من مصادر هي في غاية الأهمية لإقتصاد البلد وبيئته.
ومن المؤسف حقاً أن نجد معظم المؤلفات التي تتناول موارد العراق الطبيعية وبضمنها (علوم الحياة) من حيوانات ونباتات لا تجد من يساعد في طبعها ونشرها إلا ما ندر.
