يدور هذا الكتاب حول القرن الثالث من الثورة الصناعية، وهو القرن الذى نعيش الآن فى منتصفه؛ فالمساحة الزمنية التى يتناولها الكتاب بالتحليل تمتد من لحظة انتهاء الحرب العالمية الثانية سنة 1945م، إلى منتصف القرن الحادى والعشرين. ومن البديهى أن يتناول الكتاب بالتقييم النصف الأول الذى انصرم من ذلك القرن إلى الآن (النصف الثانى من القرن العشرين)، بينما ينصب الاستشراف والتوقع على نصفه الثانى الذى تتزامن بدايته مع توقيت وضع الكتاب (النصف الأول من القرن الحادى والعشرين).
والكتاب - من جهة أخرى - يدور حول ثورتين متوازيتين ومتفاعلتين: الثورة الصناعية الجارية والمستمرة فى العالم المتقدم، والثورة المفاجئة المتمثلة فى نمط النمو السريع والمنتشر فى قطاع عريض من العالم النامى، فبعد قرنين من التباعد السريع، يسود نمط من التقارب غير المتوقع، وهو التقارب الذى يفرضه النمو السريع والشامل الذى تشهده دول يمثل سكانها أكثر من 60% من سكان العالم اليوم.
