إن المنهج الذي يعتمد على الكفايات لا يجب أن يُبنى بطريقة عشوائية تجعل المعلم والطالب في حيرة عن مدى أهمية تلك الكفايات ، ولعل التخطيط المسبق لتضمين أي كفاية في أي منهج ووضوح الهدف منها يجعل التعامل مع ذلك المنهج سهلاً وأعظم فائدة ، فعلى سبيل المثال عندما نريد من الطالب أن يكون قادراً على التعامل مع حسابات مشروع تجاري يجب أن يكون هناك كفايات قد ضُمّنت في الكتب المدرسية يحصل منها الطالب على الحد الأدنى من كفاية الرياضيات المحاسبية ومبادئ عمليات إدارة الأعمال ، في حين سيحصل عدد لا بأس به من الطلاب على حد أعلى من تلك الكفايات .
وقد وضع القائمون على سياسة التعليم في المملكة العربية السعودية أهدافاً عدة من ضمنها المنافسة بفاعلية وحصد الجوائز في المسابقات العلمية الدولية ، ومن ضمنها مسابقة ألومبياد الرياضيات ؛ وذلك يحتم عليهم أن تكون الكتب المدرسية تحوي كثيراً من الكفايات لخدمة ذلك الهدف .
وهذا الكتاب يناقش مدى قدرة كتب رياضيات المرحلة الثانوية في المملكة العربية السعودية على تهيئة الطالب للدخول في معترك تلك المسابقة والتدرب على ذلك بامتلاكه على الأقل الحد الأدنى من الكفايات لسد الفجوة بين الكتاب المدرسي وحقائب التدريب .
ويعلم القارىء أن هذه المسابقة لها فروع أربعة نوقش فرع واحد منها في هذا الكتاب ، وهو فرع نظرية الأعداد ، وسيناقش باقي الفروع في مشروعات بحثية أخرى للمؤلف أو غيره من المهتمين والباحثين .
