إهتمت الثقافة العربية إهتماما كبيرا بالهوية , نظرا لظهور أزمة الهوية في مصر والجزائر وفلسطين و سوريا والسودان والمغرب وغيرها من الدول العربية , أكثر من مرة ففي مصر ظهرت أزمة الهوية أكثر من مرة القرن الماضي حيث برزت في العشرينات من القرن العشرين على يد أحمد لطفي السيد وطه حسين وغيرهما من المثقفين , ثم نمت هذه الأزمة وترعرت مرة أخرى في السبعينات على يد كوكبة من الأدباء والمثقفين على رأسهم توفيق الحكيم , ولكن سرعان ما خمدت تلك الأزمة , لأن حلقات ودوائر الهوية , طبقا لسلم بافلو متعددة ومتتالية , ولا تلغي بعضها البعض في أي مجتمع .
ومن أهم أثاروا ازمة الهوية في مصر : أحمد لطفي السيد , بيومي قنديل , سلامة موسى , طه حسين , سيد القمني , سامي حرك , هشام حتاته , زاهي حواس , توفيق الحكيم . وسنكتفي هنا بمؤشرات على تنامي الإهتمام العلمي والأدبي بالهوية الوطنية , بعد إستعراض سريع لمفاهيم الهوية .
