في كتابه هذا ، يتناول المؤرخ البريطاني سايمون سي. سميث الكويت في عهد عبد الله السالم وآل صباح للفترة ( 1950-1965م ) ويركّز الكتاب - كما هو واضح من عنوانه الفرعي ( بريطانيا وآل الصباح والنفط ) - على العلاقات بين الكويت وبريطانيا ، ودور النفط والمؤثرات الخارجية عليهما . يفتتح المؤلف كتابه بمقدمة يتناول فيها بالشرح أوضاع الكويت منذ تولي الشيخ مبارك صباح زمام الحكم فيها عام 1896م ، مع تركيز وتفصيل لمجريات الأحداث في حقبة حكم الشيخ أحمد الجابر الصباح ( 1921-1950م ) لا سيما أحداث نشأة ونهاية المجلس التشريعي في عامي 1938-1939م ، ثم تتوالى فصول الكتاب الستة متناولة بتسلسل زمني ومنهجي مجريات الأحداث في الكويت خلال عهد حكم الشيخ عبد الله السالم الممتد ما بين 1950 و 1965م ، وتشتمل على : التوسّع النفطي ونتائجه ( 1950-1951م ) ، الإستثمار والمشاكل الإدارية ( 1952-1955م ) ، الكويت ومصر وأزمة قناة السويس ، ( 1956م ) ، الكويت وعلاقتها بالعالم العربي ( 1957-1959م ) ، مسيرة الكويت نحو الإستقلال ، ( 1959-1961م ) ، والكويت بين التبعية والإستقلال ( 1961-1965م ) .
لذلك فإن هذا الكتاب يمثّل رواية بريطانية تؤرخ لهذه الحقبة من تاريخ الكويت ، وفي المجالات الآنفة الذكر خصوصاً ؛ قام ببحثها وروايتها مؤلف الكتاب البريطاني سايمون سي سميث ( أستاذ التاريخ الدولي بقسم التاريخ بجامعة هل حالياً ) . ولأهمية يهذا الكتاب عمل على ترجمته الأستاذ بدر ناصر الحتيتة المطيري ، ترجمة حرفية بعد تعديل عنوانه الأصلي الإنجليزي وهو ( الكويت ( 1950-1965م) : بريطانيا وآل صباح والنفط ) وضبط أسماء الأشخاص والأمكنة والأحداث والإقتباسات العربية حتى يخرج الكتاب بمستوى يليق بالقارىء العربي والكويتي في آن .
