للوجودية دلالة مزدوجة: دلالة باعتبارها تياراً فلسفياً نمت في داخله مذاهب متعددة، ودلالة بوصفها ظاهرة اجتماعية موسومة بكلمة "وجودية" تلك الكلمة التي انتشرت انتشار البدعة غير المألوفة في الأعوام الأخيرة. وهاتان الدلالتان أمران متمايزان وإن ربطت بينهما روابط عديدة. والكتاب الذي بين يدينا لا يتصدى لغير الجانب المذهبي من الوجودية: إذ يتعين أن يكشف عن أقرب المنابع المباشرة للوجودية، وأن يصف أشد الأشكال تمييزاً لها. وبالتالي فإن خطته تاريخية. بيد أنها ليست مقصورة على هذه الناحية التاريخية فحسب، إذ بدى للمؤلف محالاً أن يتجرد من كل حكم تقويمي يمس طرائق للتفكير تضع موضع التساؤل أشد مشكلات الفلسفة خطورة، وتقدم تصوراً عن الإنسان يبدو قابلاً للاعتراض من وجهات نظر شتى.
غير أنه أراد مع ذلك أن يحدد صورة الموقف النقدي الذي كان لا بد أن يتخذه، وحدوده. فهو لم يختر مذهباً يعارض به الفلسفات الوجودية التي تعرض لدراستها. وليس من شك أنه حتى مع النقد على النحو نفسه الذي انتهجه -يمكن دائماً معرفة المذهب الذي يتضمنه هذا النقد، غير أنه لم يرد أن يناقش القضايا الأساسية عند "هيدجر" و"سارتر" و"يسبرز" على أساس هذا التصور المذهبي، مهما بدا له في نظره من مبررات، ذلك أن اللوم الذي رأى أ، من واجبه توجيهه إلى هؤلاء الكتاب عشرات المرات وعني به الخطأ فيما يسمى Ignoratio elenchi (أو الخطأ في فهم معنى السؤال وخطورته)- هذا اللوم يبدو في نظره صحيحاً عام الانطباق، والعرض الذي وضعه نصب عينيه دائماً -وإن يكن يسمح مع ذلك ببعض الاستثناءات- هو أن يحكم على هذه المذاهب من الداخل، عني من حيث مبادئها الخاصة -من جهة- لكي يقدر درجة اتساقها الداخلي، ومن حيث الحجج التي برر المبادئ نفسها أو المسلمات التي تستند إليها أو تتضمنها -من جهة أخرى.
على أن حرص على الموضوعية قد أدى به إلى أن يفصل تمام الفصل بين عرض المذاهب وبين الملاحظات النقدية التي رأى من المناسب إلحاقها بها.
