أما فى غرب أفريقيا فقد أعلنت العديد من الممالك الإسلامية الجهاد ضد التوسع الفرنسى.
لم يقتصر الكفاح الوطنى على الملوك والزعماء فحسب وإنما شاركت النساء فى هذا المجال فتصدت ملكات مملكة الهوفا المسيحية فى جزيرة مدغشقر للحملات الفرنسية.
كان لكل دولة أوروبية مشروعها الاستعمارى الخاص بها فبريطانيا أرادت أن تقطع مستعمراتها القارة رأسيا أى من الكيب جنوبا حتى القاهرة شمالا أما فرنسا فقد أرادت أن تقطع مستعمراتها القارة أفقيا أى من السنغال غربا حتى جيبوتى شرقا.
تذرعت الدول الأوروبية بالمبادئ الإنسانية مثل مهمة الرجل الأبيض وواجبه الحضارى والدينى فى أفريقيا لتبرير سفك الدماء.
لعل أصدق تعبير عما اقترفه الأوروبيون ماذكره الرئيس الفرنسى فليكس فور.
"لقد تصرفنا كالمجانين فى أفريقيا"
