وتبقى القدس المدينة التي تجتذب أفئدة المؤمنين وتبقى الحلم الذي يعيش في أذهان الملايين وتبقى المدينة المقدسة التي باركها الله. لزيارة القدس أهمية عند المؤمنين يعدون لها أنفسهم ويتجاوزون لزيارتها المخاطر ليعيشوا جو قدسيتها الروحاني. ولم يكن حجاجها ليبخلوا عليها بتوثيق ما رأوه من خلال الرسومات التي تركوها لنا حيث لم يتركوا صغيرة ولا كبيرة إلا رسموها أو صوروها. فقد وضحت هذه الصور معالم القدس خلال تاريخ طويل وكانت شاهداً على التغيرات الدرامية من حيث تجدد المعالم واختلاط القديم بالجديد. فمن زلزال عام 1927م الذي سبب تغير كثير في المعالم في المدينة إلى نهاية الفترة العثمانية التي شهدت زوال كثير من المعالم القديمة ونشوء معالم جديدة داخل أسوار المدينة.
ومن هنا كانت للصور الأهمية التاريخية التي لا يمكن الاستغناء عنها لتمثيل الحقبات التاريخية المختلفة، فالصورة حتى مع ما تحمله من نظرة خاصة لصاحب الصورة تبقى التعبير الأصدق عن الواقع. وقد قام مركز الإعلام الفلسطيني بالتعاون مع وزارة الثقافة بالسلطة الفلسطينية بجمع الصور والرسومات التي تمثل الفترة من عام 1860م إلى عام 1960م ونشرها في هذا الكتاب فكانت كل صورة تمثل كنزاً من الكنوز وجوهرةً من الجواهر.
وقد اجتذبت غالبية الصور قبة الصخرة المشرفة ومباني الحرم القدسي وكنيسة القيامة، وبقيت كثير من الصور التي تعذر الوصول إليها بانتظار من يكتشفها ويوصلها إلى النور.
