"لا يزال الجدل محتدماً حول هذا الكتاب، فمُعده "سلومون فولكوف" لم ينشر وثائقه الأصلية بعد، لذا شكك الكثيرون في صحة ما جاء فيه. لكن في المقابل أكد كثيرون أيضاً ما أتى به هذا الكتاب، منهم عائلة شوستاكوفيتش، باستثناء أرملته إيرينا (الزوجة الثالثة) بحجة أن فولكوف لم يلتق شوستاكوفيتش إلا ثلاث مرات. لكن الحقيقة أن العلاقة المهنية التي جمعت بينهما استمرت 15 عاماً.
أكد كثيرون اطلاعهم على الوثائق الأصلية، وأحال فولكوف عدم نشر الوثائق بسبب أن مالكها هو الناشر الأمريكي، وصرح مكسيم ابن ديمتري شوستاكوفيتش بصحتها أكثر من مرة، وفي أحد اللقاءات التلفزيونية قالت غالينا، ابنة شوستاكوفيتش: "أنا ممتنة لـ فولكوف. لا شيء زائف هنا، حتى الخطاب هو خطاب شوستاكوفيتش، وليس اختيار المفردات فقط، بل حتى ورودها في السياقات هي لـ شوستاكوفيتش".
يكتب الأستاذ يزن اللجمي في إحدى مقالاته عن شوستاكوفيتش: "خلال الحرب الباردة، ظل الجدل محتدماً في الغرب حول كيفية التعامل مع شوستاكوفيتش أخلاقياً وفنياً، فبينما اعتبر البعض أسلوبه رجعياً ومتأخراً بالنسبة لعصره، دافع عنه آخرون مشيرين إلى أن بطولته يصعب فهمها من قبل أولئك الذين عاشوا طوال حياتهم في مجتمعات حرة ومزدهرة." تقدم المتوسط هذا الكتاب للقارئ العربي الذي قد يكون الأقدر على فهم هكذا نوع من البطولات، فما أكثر من عايش، ومن لا يزال يعايش أنظمة فاقت في قمعها وجبروتها نظام ستالين."
