أختار المؤلف من تاريخ الإسلام في آسيا الوسطي عصرا بارزا بالفتح العربي، وينتهي في منتصف القرن الخامس الهجري ، وهو العصر الذي غلب فيه الأتراك السلاجقة علي إبران والعراق ، وغلب فيه الأتراك الغزنونيون علي شمال الهند، إن اتصال آسيا الوسطي بالإسلام جاء عن طريق الفتوح كمفهوم جغرافي ، لأن الإسلام في تركستان وفد إليها من إيران أول الأمر ثم عن طريق تركستان وغزنة بعد ذلك.
إذن المفهوم الإسلامي لآسيا الوسطي يتسع كثيراً عن المفهوم الجغرافي ليشمل إيران وكيف دخلت في الإسلام وتأثرت به وانطبعت الحياة الإسلامية فيها بتراثها القديم، وعن طريق إيران دخل الإسلام تركستان. وكانت مدارس إيران الإسلامية إشعاعا فكريا أمتد إلي ما وراء النهر وتركستان الشرقية ، والحركة الإسلامية في تركستان تأثرت بالحركة الإسلامية في إيران ، والإحياء الفارسي نبع من خراسان وما وراء النهر وغلب علي تركستان ، وعن طريق إيران دخل العرب إقليم السند.
والأتراك الذين غلبوا علي غزنة اندفعوا إلي شماء الهند لينشروا الإسلام، وحملوا معهم مقوماتهم السياسية والعقيدية والفكرية ، ودخلت حركة الإحياء الفارسي الهند مع الغزنويين، وإذا بإيران وتركستان وشمال الهند تكاد أن تكون عالما إسلاميا قائما بذاته يدين بالإسلام ويتذوق الأدب الفارسي الجديد، وهنا نجد أن الكتاب تناول كل قطر علي حده ، فبدأ بإيران ثم تركستان ثم الهند ؛ وأفرد لكل إقليم بابا خاصاً وجعل الدراسة في كل باب تسير علي النهج التالي:
أحوال البلاد قبل الفتوح، الفتوح، انتشار الإسلام وأسباب نجاحه، نتائج الدخول في الإسلام.
