تحكى الرواية كيف خرج الفلاحون من قراهم واكتشفوا عالم المدينة الصاخب. عالم يأسر اللب والقلب، يغير فيهم فيغيرون فيهم بدورهم. ومع هؤلاء تفقد القاهرة بريقها، فتصير مكانا للقصور الفارهة، تتوارى خلف عمدانها الشاهقة الحدائق والجنان. قاهرة المللك فاروق البهية، تتحول فى هذه الوراية إلى حدائق من الخرسانة المنهكة، تعبر عن روح ساكنيها الذين حتى إن حاولوا الهروب إلى الغرب لا يجدون مفرا من العودة. وبين الرحيل والعودة يرتسم مستقبل جيل تفتت احلامة على صخرة الإنقتاح.
