كان عهد الملك فؤاد الأول ملك مصر عهد يمن وبركة على الأزهر والأزهريين. ففـي هذا العهد، وعلى يد الشيخ محمد الأحمدي الظواهري شيخ الجامع الأزهر، تحول الجامع الأزهر إلى جامعة حديثة، تساير العصر فيما استجد أو تغير من طرق البحث والكشف، وتضيف إلى علومها الأزهرية القديمة طائفة أخرى من العلوم الحديثة، التي لا بد منها لرجل الدين في القرن العشرين.
إن وقائع حياة الشيخ الأحمدي الظواهري في الأزهر، طالبًا وعالمًا وشيخًا، وكذلك الحوادث غير العادية التي كانت له مع أمراء مصر وملوكها من عهد الخديو عباس الثاني إلى الملك فؤاد، كان لها من الطرافة بل ومن الأهمية السياسية والاجتماعية ما يجذب القارئ إلى الاستمتاع بها والتشوق لمعرفتها، وتلقي الضوء على بعض وسائل الحكم وأسبابه في مصر في مختلف العصور.
الشيخ محمد الأحمدي بن إبراهيم الظواهري (1878-1944) فقيه شافعي مصري وخطيب فيه نزعة صوفية شاذلية، ولد في قرية كفر الظواهري بشرقية مصر، وتعلم في الأزهر، وأخذ عن الشيخ محمد عبده وآخرين. عين الظواهري شيخًا للأزهر الشريف عام 1929 واستقال عام 1935 وأصدر الأزهر أثناء تلك الفترة مجلة «نور الإسلام». له كتاب بعنوان «العلم والعلماء» في نظام التعليم وضعه حين بدأ دعوته إلى إصلاح الأزهر. قال له الشيخ محمد عبده: «إن أباك سمَّاك «الأحمدي» نسبةً إلى السيد أحمد البدوي».
