الكتاب، وإن اوحى عنوانة بكونه عملا وثائقيا او بحثا علميا, فهو على العكس من ذلك، عمل أدبي بامتياز، يفوص في عالم ليلي، الفتاة ذات الاربعة عشر ربيعا، التي تعيش مع والدها في مزرعه الدراق، على مقربة من بلدة سيلفان، وتعاني من غلظة طبعه وقسوتة ومن أنواع العقوبات التي لم يكن لأحد غيره أن يخترها. وتعاني ليلي كذلك من غياب والدتها التي توفيت وهي في الرابعة من عمرها. وكانت مسالة وفاتها امرا يتحاشى الجميع الخوض فيه، غير مدركين ان ذاكرة ليلي لم تتخلص تماما من صدى العيار الناري الذي انطلق ذلك اليوم، بل إن تلك الذكرى تؤرقها وتجعلها واثقة من كونها شخصا لا يستحق الحب. ولتهرب ليلي من كل ذلك، فإنها تنزوين، بين الفينة والأخرى، إلى ركن قصي من المزرعة، وتركن إلي بعض الاشياء التي تبقت من مقتنيات امها: زوج من القفازات البيضاء وصورتان، إحداهما لوالدتها والأخرى لمريم السوداء وقد ألصقت على إطار خشبي وكتب خلفها عنوان مبهم "تيبورن,ك. ج." فما حكاية ذلك العنوان يا ترى ؟
