يعد كتاب السيرة النبوية لابن هشام من الكتب القديمة في تاريخ سيدنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، وهو أشهر كتب السيرة، اهتم به العلماء فوضعوا له الشروح أحيانا، واختصروه أحيانا أخرى قديما وحديثا و كتاب ابن هشام هذا عبارة عن تهذيب لكتاب ابن اسحاق قبله الذي وصل إلينا منه القليل وفقد أكثره، وهذا جانب آخر من أهميته، فحذف منه ما وجده خارجا عن الموضوع أو ضعيفا، وزاد عليه حيث وجد ذلك مناسبا . وقد أثبت فيه ما وجده مناسبا من الأشعار وقد شرح المحققون بعض المواضع الغامضة، وترجموا للأعلام، ووضعوا عناوين للفقرات كما زودوا الكتاب بالفهارس العلمية.
