اختار الأب الياس (حلاوي، في هذا الكتاب، طائفةً من المرتدّين، وهم من مشارب متعدّدةٍ، وتوجّهاتٍ متباينة، ولكنّهم أجمعوا كلهم على الشهادة لحبّ الفادي وعلى تميّز تعاليم الإنجيل في اقتياد العالم إلى الخلاص والسلام، فكانوا للضالين جرس إنذارٍ، وللباحثين عن الحقيقة مناراتٍ هدايةٍ.
فهناك من لم يستطيعوا سماع صوت الله، إلاّ بعد أن انعتقوا من دويّ أصوات العالم التي أضمّتهم، وليس أسوأ صمماً ممِّن لا يريد أن يسمع سوى ذاته، ولم يشفّ الذين ردّهم الله إليه إلاّ بعد أن غاصوا: في عزلة سجنٍ: أمثال جاك فيش، وأندريه لوفيه، أو في صمت صحراء: أمثال شارل دي فوكو، وإرنست بسيكاري أو في خشوع كنيسة: أمثال أندريه فروسّار، وألفونس راتسبون أو في خشوع دير: أمثال توماس مرتون.
ومنهم من اغتروا بأنظمة سياسيّة قائمةٍ على إيديولوجيّاتٍ زاخرةٍ بالوعود الآخاذة، تدّعي تحقيق العدالة، والمساواة والإخاء، ولكنها، في الواقع أمعنت ممارساتها في الظلم والبغي وإنتهاك الكرامات والحرّيّات، ومناقضة كلّ ما ادّعته ودعت إليه، وإلى كلّ ذلك دعت إلى إنكار الله، فأصيب من انجرفوا إلى تيّار تلك الأنظمة بخيبةٍ مريرةٍ، بعد أن تيقّنوا من زيفها وكذبها: يمثّل هؤلاء كلٌّ من تاتيانا غوربتشيفا، ودوغلاس هايد، وإنياس ليب، ونيكول هاليري، الذين تبيّنوا حماقةَ إدّعاء إرواء عطشٍ أبديٍّ بكؤوس الزمن المادّيّة، وزعمَ إصلاح خلل المجتمعات بإثارة الأحقاد والإمعان في العنف.
