يتناول هذا الكتاب تاريخ الدولة العثمانية منذ نشأتها حتى نهاية العصر الذهبي بمنظور علمي جديد يتمشى مع الدراسات التاريخية الحديثة التي تهتم بتقسيم التاريخ إلى مراحل وفترات طبقًا لمجريات الأحداث وتطور الأوضاع الداخلية والخارجية. ويركز الكتاب على أعمال السلاطين وعلى ما أحدثوه من تحول في تاريخ المسلمين بل وفي تاريخ البشرية جمعاء. فبنظرة إلى فتح القسطنطينية 1453م مثلًا نجد أن حدث ضخم يعتبر من العلامات البارزة التي غيرت مجرى التاريخ. كما أن فتح الشام ومصر 1517م يعتبر علامة أخرى بارزة تدل على تغير استراتيجية الامبراطورية العثمانية في مجال الفتح.
وإذا أردنا فهم تاريخ العرب الحديث وتاريخ الشرق الأوسط أو تاريخ البلقان أو تاريخ القوقاز، فلا غنى لنا عن دراسة تاريخ الدولة العثمانية بأبعادها المختلفة لأنها حكمت هذه الديار جميعها. والكتاب مزود بالخرائط والصور واللوحات، ومليء بالوثائق التي تنشر لأول مرة، كما أنه مزود ولأول مرة أيضًا بمخططات المعارك العسكرية الحاسمة التي دارت بين الدول العثمانية وخصومها، والتي رسمها الخبراء العسكريون الكبار عن أرض المعارك موضحين موقع كل جانب من الجوانب في مواجهة الجانب الآخر.
