من اللوازم المهمة للعلوم هو دراسة مبادئ ومقدمات أو مداخل العلم محل الدراسة، كتوطئة ضرورية لمعرفة المفاهيم والتصورات، وكذلك المنهج المتعلق بدراسة العلم الذي سيتم البحث في موضوعه. ويعتبر علم مقارنة الأديان comparative religion هو أحد فروع علم الكلام أو علم أصول الدين، أو التوحيد، فالعلاقة بين علم الكلام ومقارنة الأديان هي علاقة عموم وخصوص، فالأول يبحث عن وجود الله وصفاته التي يجب أن يوصف بها، أو يجوز وصفه تعالى بها، أو يجب أن تنفي عنه، وعن الرسل وصفاتهم من حيث ما يجب، وما يجوز، وما يمتنع في حقهم، وكذلك السمعيات من أجل البرهنة عليها ودفع الشبه عنها. ومقارنة الأديان نشأ واستمر لفترة طويلة مرتبطًا بالدفاع عن عقائد معينة ونقض عقائد مضادة، ثم تحول نسبيًا إلى علم وصفي في العصور الحديثة خاصة مع تراجع المسلمين نسبيًا في مجال الكتابة في هذا العلم. وتوجد حاليًا محاولات لتوسيع أفق علم مقارنة الأديان ليتحول من مجرد علم وصفي إلى علم فلسفي نقدي يجمع بين ثالوثية الوصف العلمي، والتحليل الفلسفي، والنقد العقلي الملتزم بمعايير المنطق.
