هذا الكتاب محاولة أولى لتبيان أثر أدب بلاد ما بين النهرين في الأدب التوراتي، في الألف الأوّل قبل الميلاد. وجاء ذلك لأسباب عديدة، كان أهمها تجاهل الكثير من الباحثين اليهود هذا التأثير المهم، والتقليل من شأنه، وتطلّب منّا العمل في البدء تقديم مادة تاريخية غزيرة بالمعلومات عن عراقة أدب بلاد ما بين النهرين وقِدَمه، لأنه في الواقع من الصعب معرفة تطور تاريخ البشرية، وكيفية تأثّرها بحضارة بلاد ما بين النهرين، دون تتبّع حضارات الأخيرة، كونها كانت مهدا لنشوء أقدم الحضارات الإنسانية، لاسيما الحضارة السومرية والحضارة الأكدية. ومن ثمّ بعد ذلك انتقلنا إلى الهدف الرئيس من الكتاب، والمتمثل بتثبيت المادة التاريخية التي توضح أثر أدب بلاد ما بين النهرين على الأدب التوراتي، وقد اعتمدنا في ذلك على أوثق المصادر والمراجع ذات العلاقة بالمصادر الأثرية بشقَّيْها المادي والكتابي. وقد بيّنّا في هذا البحث عراقة حضارة وادي الرافدين التي سبقت الحضارات الأخرى، والتي شهدتها المنطقة بعشرات القرون، لاسيما الحضارة السومرية والحضارة الأكدية بشقّيها البابلي والآشوري، ويمكن أن يُطلَق عليه التأثير غير المباشر، أما التأثير المباشر؛ فقد تمثّل بالترحيل لليهود الآشوري والبابلي، حيث انتهت دولتا إسرائيل في الشمال، ودويلة يهودا في الجنوب، وأصبح المُرحَّلون في اتصال مباشر مع الحضارتين الآشورية والبابلية، ففي بابل مثلاً بدأ اليهود، الذين أخذت تسميتهم تطغى على العبرانية وبني إسرائيل، اتصالهم المباشر بالحضارة البابلية التي تركت أثرها في إلهامهم بكتابة التوراة والتلمود اللذَيْن يُعدّان المصدر الرئيس لتاريخهم وشريعتهم، والخطّ المربّع، والكثير من أوجه الحضارة التي تناولناها في البحث.
