تكمن أهمية هذا البحث فى أنه يعالج بالدراسة والتحليل مدينة السويس فى النصف الأول من القرن التاسع عشر (1805 - 1848) وهي فترة زمينة من أخصب فترات تاريخها الحديث، خاصة بعد اعتلاء محمد على حكم مصر والذى أحدث بدوره الكثير من التحديث والتجديد بالبلاد ، ومن بينها السويس، إذ جعلها عام 1810 محافظة ضمن التظيمات الإدارية التى أجراها فى رداية حكمه. وسوف نحاول فى هذه الدراسة طرح عدة تساؤلات حول موقع السويس في قائمة أولويات محمد علي، ومدى حرصه على تطويرها، ومدى وعيه بحركة التجارة العالمية فى ذلك الوقت، وكذلك اهتمت الدراسة بمحاولة الإجابة عن تساؤل مهم حول مدى التنوع الاقتصادي فى مدينة السويس، وما إذا كانت مجرد نقطة تجمع للحجاج والتجار فقط، ام أنها كانت مدينة متكاملة الأركان، متعددة الأنشطة الاقتصادية.
