إن التوقف عن الكتابة مصدر رعب عند القراء، ومورد قلق متصل ومتواصل، وخوف من توقف التأويل، وانتهاء القراءة، ولم يخاف القارئ نت التوقف؟ وهل يخشى على وظيفته من أن تنتهي في الحياة؟ وهل هذا ما يجعل قراء محفوظ على قلق وخوف من توقفه؟ وهل توقفه عن الكتابة يصحبه توقف قرائه عن مواصلة التأويل والبحث في المستحيل، للوصول إلى إكسير القراءة؟، أم أنه رغبة منهم و تطلع إلى أن يستمر في الكتابة بلا خاتمة، و يملأ عالمهم بالذكريات الجميلة؟ وهل هذا ما يجعل أنور المعداوي يفجع بالخاتمة والانتهاء، انتهاء مبدع أحبه كثيراً، بعدما قرأ له "زقاق المدق"، فشعر أن هذا العمل الكبير لا بد أن يصحبه انتهاء وموت، ولذلك سجل اعترافه قائلاً:" لقد أتى علي وقت ظننت فيه أن نجيب محفوظ قد بلغ غايته في زقاق المدق، وأنه لن يخطو بعد ذلك خطوة أخرى إلى الأمام". لكن محفوظ فاجأه من جديد برواية "بداية ونهاية"، فادرك أن غاية الفن لا تخبو أبدا. وخوف القراء من انقطاع محفوظ عن الكتابة وتوقفه لا يتوقف، ويستمر مراوغاً فاطمة موسى التي ظنت مثل المعداوي أن محفوظ بلغ الذروة في ابداع الرواية بعدما أصدر الجزء الأخير من الثلاثية عندها- مثلما تقول- بدأ القراء في القول" إن الكاتب قد أفرغ ما في جعبته"، لكنة عاد وفاجأ القراء بــ"أولاد حارتنا". وايقاع القلق وخوف التوقف انتاب رجاء النقاش أيضاً مثلما انتاب المعداوي وفاطمة بعدما أصدر محفوظ الثلاثية، وكان يظن أن نجيب محفوظ انتهى أديباً وأدى رسالته، وحاول النقاش أن يفسر سبب الظن، فلم يجد سببا مسوغا الا أن يكون مصدره المؤلف نفسه، لكنه يرى بحزم أنه كان اعتقادا سائداً معششاً في الحياة الأدبية.
