إن صنعة المعاجم، على شمم مكانتها ورفعتها، بيد أنها صنعة تستنفد العمر وتفل الحد، لذا لا يقارب تخومها إلا من روض نفسه حقاً على خوض عبابها. ذلك أن في صنعة المعاجم إرهاقاً للنفس وإضناء للجسم. المقدمات الثلاث التاليات لهذه المقدمة في هذا المعجم توضح للقارئ حقيقة المعاناة التي واكبت المؤلف في الطبعتين الأولى والثانية، ثم رافقت المؤلفين في الطبعة الثالثة: متاعب صاحبت مؤلفي المعجم في رحلتهما الشاقة لتحقيق هذا العمل المتميز الضخم.
خاض المؤلفان الدكتور آرثر أس.ريبر والدكتورة إيملي أس.ريبر تقليبات المصطلحات النفسية، والطبية النفسية، والطبية البدنية، وأنواع العلاجات، وأصناف العقاقير، وضروب المضادات الحيوية، واجتهدا في تصريفاتها، وأبحرا في أديم أسمائها وأوصافها، فبلغا فيها الشأو المرتجى. لقد ضمنا هذا المعجم ما يربي على (17000) سبعة عشر ألف مصطلح، استجمعا فيها بين الدقة الحداثة من ناحية، وبين مسيس الحاجة، من ناحية ثانية.
ففي هذا المعجم من المناقب الشيء الكثير مما ينم عن إحاطة مؤلفيه بخصائص علم النفس خاصة، وبخصائص العلوم التي ضمناها محتوياته عامة، ومما يكشف عن مدى ضلاعتهما في هذه العلوم وعلى مجاريها ومصارفها، والتبحر في جلائلها ودقائقها. وقد أعاد المؤلفان، في الطبعة الثالثة هذه، النظر جذرياً لتحديث مواد المعجم بما يتلاءم ومستجدات العلم المتسارع.
لذا سيجد في هذا المعجم، كل من الباحث في علم النفس والطبيب النفساني والطبيب، والمرتاض، والريض، حاجته وبغيته.
وما أقدم المترجمان على ترجمة هذا المعجم، والتعليق على ما استبهم أحياناً، والشرح حيثما أملت الضرورة، إلا لما أيقنا من شدة الحاجة إليع، وفقدان ما يسده مما ألف في بابه من قبل. واستكمالاً للإنتفاع العلمي المنشود فقد ضمنا في نهاية المعجم هذا صوراً وأشكالاً توضيحية لتسهيل فهم المصطلحات الطبية والطبية النفسية.
