يرى "الحجوي الثعالبي" أن تجاهل التأثير الأوربي في عصرنا الحديث ضرب من المحال، ونكران هذا التأثير أو التقليل من أهميته وقوة تأثيره ضرب من التجاهل المضر، كما أن فتح الأبواب مشرعة في وجه هذا التأثير الغازي يجعل من بلداننا مجرد هامش حضاري تابع لأوربا، فلا بد من الحذر والاحتياط ولابد من وقاية للذات. فمثقفونا إذا تربوا في أحضان هذه الحضارة الاستعمارية ونهلوا منها فإنهم يبشرون بها وينشرون فكرها وثقافتها وفنها وذوقها ونمط معيشتها؛ لأن هذه الحضارة تتيح لهم صورة رثة جامدة عن أصولهم الحضارية ينفر منها كل عقل عصري مستنير. لذلك تصدى الحجوي للمعضلة ودعا إلى الخروج بالبلاد الإسلامية من عزلة القرون الوسطى وكسر حاجز الغيرية عن الحضارة الحديثة، والتتلمذ على الحضارة الأوربية فيما لا يتعارض مع أصول الشريعة الإسلامية التي يجب أن تواكب المصالح المتجددة للمسلمين.
