هذا واحد من كتب مايك داش العديدة في التاريخ الإجتماعي، وهو يعد واحداً من أهم كتبه التي أصدرها على مدى السنوات الماضية، ولقد كتبه داش بذكاء وأناة وبحث ومتابعة.
ويرصد زهرة الزنبق من أول العثور عليها في جبال تيان شان في آسيا قبل أكثر من ألف وخمسمئة عام، مروراً بوضعها وتطورها في الإمبراطورية العثمانية، ثم وصولها في عام 1562 إلى هولندا.
كتاب يسرد قصة الزنبق، ورحلة الزهرة من الصحارى والجبال والبراري إلى قصور السلاطين العثمانيين، كما أنه ثري في رحلته الطويلة بين الوثائق والمصادر والمراجع، وفي غوصه في النفس الإنسانية حين تغدو فريسة للجشع وخداع الذات، فيه تصوير لُحمّى اجتاحت أهم المدن الهولندية في القرنين السادس عشر والسابع عشر، إنها حُمّى الزنبق الذي دفعت المضاربة في أسعاره أحد المواطنين لأن يبيع قصراً منيفاً مقابل ثلاث أبصال، وآخر يبيع مصنعه ومتجره من أجل حفنة من الزنبق.
ويصور الولع بالزنبق حدثاً مدهشاً في التاريخ الإنساني، حين وصلت أسعار الأبصال إلى أرقام فلكية بمعايير ذلك الزمان، ثم انخفضت وهوى معها زارعو الزنبق وتجاره وعشاقه.
إنه بحث في الجمال الطبيعي للزنابق في بهائها وصفاتها وألوانها وأصنافها التي بلغت عدة آلاف.
