وعُدَّ إختراع الخطوط الحديدية حدثاً عالمياً مهماً، أسهم في تطور وسائل النقل البري وبدء عهد جديد في تاريخ الحضارة العالمية، كما كان له دور في توجيه أهداف الدول الصناعية وسياساتها؛ للتغلغل الأوروبي في بلدان المشرق العربي، طوال القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي.
الكتاب يُلقي الضوء على تنافس الدول المتقدمة صناعياً بهدف الحصول على حقوق إمتياز إقامة مشاريع الخطوط الحديدية في المشرق العربي، خلال القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي؛ إضافة إلى تقييم التبدلات التي تحققت من وراء إنشاء الخطوط الحديدية، في المشرق العربي، في المجالات السياسية، والعسكرية، والإجتماعية، والإقتصادية؛ على الرغم من كل ما اعترى تنفيذها من تعقيدات.
وقد تضمت هذه الدراسة عدداً من الوثائق المهمة باللغات العربية والتركية والإنجليزية، المتعلقة بالعقود الخاصة بتنفيذ الخطوط الحديدية في مصر وبلاد الشام.
