تحتل زيمبابوي مكانة هامة وسط دول الجنوب الأفريقي للعديد من الاعتبارات أهمها: أنها إحدى أكثر دول الجنوب الأفريقي استقرارًا على الأقل منذ عام الاستقلال 1980، ولها تجربتها الناجحة في التعايش ما بين البيض والسود، فضلاً عن كونها ثاني أكبر الاقتصاديات في منطقة الجنوب الأفريقي بعد جنوب أفريقيا (بمعيار الناتج المحلى الإجمالي) ولها شبكة متداخلة من العلاقات الإقليمية والدولية.وطبقًا لنظام حيازة الأرض المطبق عام 1969 (أي في فترة ما قبل استقلال زيمبابوي) كان حوالي 50% من أراضى الدولة مملوكة للمزارعين البيض، وهى تشمل معظم الأراضي الزراعية في الشمال والشرق. في حين أن معظم المزارعين السود كانوا يعيشون في الأراضي المنخفضة التي تقع في الجنوب والغرب والتي تعانى من قلة الأمطار وعدم خصوبة التربة وتناسب الرعي أكثر من الزراعة. ورغم تعديل هذا النظام الحيازى في عام 1979 قبل حصول زيمبابوي على استقلالها، فإنه لم ينجم عن هذا التعديل سوى القليل من الاختلاف في توزيع الأراضي، حيث ظل حوالي 45% من إجمالي مساحة الأراضي الزراعية مملوكة لستة آلاف مزارع من المزارعين البيض في شكل مزارع تجارية كبيرة.
