ما جاء في كتب اللغة والنحو من كثرة الإحتجاج بشعره وأنَّ عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه استمع إلى شعره وكاد يجيزه عليه.
وقد أجمعت الروايات على تمثل النبي صلى الله عليه بشيء من شعره، مِمَّا جعل ابن حجر العسقلاني يترجم له ضمن أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في "الإصابة في تمييز الصحابة" وقيل: أدرك الجاهلية والإسلام، ولا يعرف له صحبة.
غير أنَّ أخطر ما جاء في سيرته أنَّ عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه قد أهدر دمه، وقيل إنَّه سجن وجُلد ثمانين جلدة ثم رجع إلى بلاده، وقيل: إن بني الحسحاس قد أوثقوه وقتلوه لتغزله بحرائرهم، وقيل: بل وضع في أخدود وألقي عليه الحطب ثم أحرق.
