يتناول هذا البحث دراسة موضوع الحرف والصناعات فى عهد محمد على التى تمثل إحدى القوى المهمة المكونة للمجتمع المصرى حيث لعبت دورا مهما فى تاريخه وكان الدكتور صلاح هريدى قد تقدم بهذا البحث للحصول على درجة الماجستير فى التاريخ الحديث بكلية الآداب جامعة الإسكندرية عام 1978 تحت إشرافى وقد حاول إظهار الصعاب التى واجهت محمد على فلا النهوض بالصناعات المختلفة والوسائل المتعددة فى إنشاء المصانع والاستعانة بالأوروبيين وتطبيق ما يعرف بـ " التجنيد الصناعى " لإدخال العنصر المصرى فى إطار هذا التطور الجديد الذى شهدته مصر خلال النصف الأول من القرن التاسع عشر كما أرسل محمد على البعثات إلى أوروبا فى كافة التخصصات لخدمة هذا الهدف وأحضر الآلات والمعدات المتطورة للنهوض بالصنعاة غير ان هذه النهضة الجديدة مالبثت ان تأثرت بالنتائج التى ترتبت على أوضاع مصر السياسية بعد عام 1840.
