اذا صادف وقام أحد رجال الأئمة بتدوين سيرته فإنها تكون سيرة حافلة بالأحداث المتميزة وذلك لأن كتب السيرة تتميز عن غيرها من كتب التاريخ في خصوصية الأحداث التى تتناولها. وترجع أهمية سيرة الإمام أحمد بن سليمان إلى أنها تغطي فترة تمتد بين سنة 532 إلى 566هـ لم تأخذ حظها من التدوين مع أنها تتناول فترة تاريخية في غاية الأهمية لتاريخ اليمن وهى فترة تفكك الدولة الصلحية وقيام الإمارات المستقلة على انقاضها كما تتناول علاقة الإمام المتوكل أحمد بن سليمان بالقبائل اليمينةوبأبناء عمومته فى المخلاف السليماني وبالقوى السياسية الأخرى مثل بن حاتم في صنعاء وبنى نجاح في زبيد وبني زريع في عدن وبني مهدي في تهامة كما تناول أيضا الصراع العلمي والفكري الذي شهدته اليمن في القرن السادس بين فرق الزيدية والثلاثوهى المخترعة والمطرفية والحسينية وعلى وجه الخصوص بين علماء المطرفية من ناحية وبين القاضي جعفر صاحب الفضل في تأسيس مدرسة علمية في اليمن اعتمدت على فكر المعتزلة كما حفظت السيرة أشعار الإمام أحمد بن سليمان التى عبر فيها عن كل الأحداث التى مر بها والتى تعد مرآة للحياة الأدبية السائدة في القرن السادس الهجري.
