Dans ses premières œuvres, Thomas d’Aquin n’accordait aucune importance au verbe dans le phénomène de la connaissance. Ce n’est que plus tard qu’il a reconnu cette importance. Entre les premières œuvres du jeune Thomas et les œuvres postérieures, toute une évolution sur ce point a eu lieu.
La question qui se pose est de savoir à quoi est due cette évolution dans la pensée thomiste. Si saint Thomas a soutenu tout au début de sa carrière philosophique une conception purement aristotélicienne, n’a-t-il pas subi aussi une influence, directe ou indirecte, de la pensée arabe ?
Tel est le problème que nous proposons de traiter dans cette étude. Il s’agira de voir quelle place occupe le verbe dans la pensée arabe ; et comment cette pensée faut traduite et présentée à l’Occident latin.
