هذا الكتاب عبارة عن دراسات وأبحاث نشرت في دوريات علمية محكمة أو شاركت بها في مؤتمرات محلية او عالمية، بعد إضافة التعديلات والمصطلحات. وهى دراسات غير تقليدية، تتناول التاريخ الاقتصادي والاجتماعي لبعض الجاليات الأوروبية والعربية، في مدينة الإسكندرية إبان العصر العثمانين ، دراسة وثائقية تعتمد في المقام الأول على أرشيف المحكمة الشرعية بالشهر العقاري بالإسكندرية، قبل نقله إلى دار الوثائق القومية بالقاهرة. فمن الجاليات، نجد اليونانيون والاوربيون ومن العرب الحجازيون والشوام والمغاربة وقد بدأنا الحديث عن اليونانيين واستقرارهم بالاسكندرية إلى أن استقروا واستقلوا عن الدولة العثمانية بعد ان كانوا ضمن رعاياها وتم التعرض لنشاطهم الاقتصادي من واقع تلك السجلات كما تعرضت لحياتهم الاجتماعية بجوانبها المختلفة اما الوضعع للأوربيين فهنا الوضع يختلف ، فكان وجودهم في الاسكندرية يرجع إلى الاتفاقيات. أما بقية الجاليات الأخرى كالحجازين والشوام والمغاربة ، فإنهم عوملوا على أنهم من رعايا الدولة العثمانية.
