يشكّل هذا الكتاب قراءة شعرية "بيير ريفردي" تقديم وترجمة إسكندر حبش الذي رأي فيه شاعر الغرابة، لكنها غرابة الواقع، شاعر الوحدة، لكنها الوحدة المأهولة بالنظرة إلى أشياء الواقع.
يبدأ الكاتب بنبذة عن حياة الشعر واعترافاته "لا أعرف أبداً، مثال عمل أدبي أوحى بقلّة ثقة لمؤلفه، أكثر من عملي أنا" . هكذا اعترف بيير ريفردي في أواخر حياته. وبالرغم من اعترافه هذا، لم يخطئ الجميع، حين كالوا له المديح وهو لما يزل على قيد الحياة، وحتى قبل أن يبلغ الثلاثين من عمره، كان ريفردي معلماً من معلمي الشعر. لقد استطاع الشاعر أن يبدع شعراً له القوة والتجديد "اللذان كانا حاضرين في اللوحة التشكيلية التكعيبية". من هنا استل قلمه وكتب "قصائد نثرية" (1915)، ومن ثم "حرامي تالان" (وهي قصة متخيلة، ذات منحى سيري ذاتي، أو بالأحرى كانت رواية – قصيدة (191) بحسب ما عرفها الشاعر . كذلك كتب بعض القصائد" (1916). ومثلما هو الأمر في التكعيبية. يقول المؤلف: "كان ريفردي يُراكم في شعر العناصر الحسية، في حين أن فضاءها روحاني، غامض، لم يستطع القول ولا الشرح". في خضم هذا النشاط ولدت الحركة السوريالية ولم يتأثر بها الشاعر "لا تحجب سوريالية ريفردي شيئاً، فهي لا تنطلق إلا في الليل الداخلي ... وهذا أمر من غير الممكن قبوله لأن السوريالية عنده أن تكون باباً إلى نور الحياة المار فوق طبيعة، هذا النور الذي يعمي ...". كذلك يذكر المؤلف "الجزء النثري" في أعمال ريفردي "المتمثل في دفاتر ملاحظاته. نشر ريفردي، خلال حياته، ثلاثة كتب من "الملاحظات" حملت العناوين الآتية: "كف البدة" (1928) و "يوميات سفينة" (1948) و "بلا ترتيب" (1956).
يضم الكتاب نصوص شعرية ونثرية مترجمة للشاعر بيير ريفردي نذكر من عناوينها: "تعويذة" ، "الريح والروح" ، "رغبة" ، "أبعد من هنا" ، "وحدي دائماً" ، "شتاء" ، "سير قسري" ، "قروي الريح" ، "فنادق" ، "كرنفال" (...) وعناوين أخرى.
