تدور القصِّة حول "بول مانينغ" البالغ من العمر تسعة عشر عاماً، والّذي ينتقل إلى الريف ليعمل في بلدةٍ قريبةٍ من مزرعة الأمل التي يملكها أهل أمّه، حيث يلتقي ابنة خاله (الثانية) فيليس هولمان، الجميلة والمحبوبة، التي تصغره بعامين، وتبدو مرتبكة بسبب وقوفها الصعب عند حافّة المراهقة.
ومع أنّ عالمها محدودٌ وضيّقٌ إلّا أنّها كانت واسعة الفكر محبّةٌ للتعلّم بشكلٍ كبيرٍ مثلما كان أبوها.
لقد أقرّ معظم النقّاد بأنّ (بنت الخال فيليس) هي تتويج لما أنجزته "إليزابيث غاسكل" في مجال الروايات القصيرة، وهي رواية بسيطة وغير معقدة، لكنّ، إيجابيّاتها تكمن في شكل سردها وحبكتها.
(بنت الخال فيليس) اعتبرت أيضاً خاتمة العقد لروايتها الأكثر شهرةً وإنتشاراً (زوجات وبنات)، الّتي نشرت مسلسلةً في مجلة (كورن هل مغازين) من آب 1864 حتّى كانون الثاني 1866.
