للأرض وأدوية للأمراض، ومواداً متنوعة لصناعات متعددة. ومع ذلك كل هذا مجرد وعد بعطاء أكبر يمكن ان يقدمه البحر للبشر. وهذا الكتاب لا يدعي انه سيضع تحت عيون القارئ وكل ما أكتشفه العلماء في البحار، من أسرار حياة كائناتها، أو فوائد ثرواتها. لأن ذلك يحتاج إلى مؤلفات كثيرة لا تفيد ولا يفهمها إلا الاختصاصي. وإنما أريد أن أقدم للقارئ، جملة مفيدة من المعلومات الأساسية، التي كنت أجمعها على مدى سنوات طويلة، لأثقف بها نفسي. وها أنا اعتصرها لأقدمها مكثفة، عسى أن ترسم للقارئ صورة عن الحياة الجميلة أو المدهشة التي تزخر بها مياه البحر، وعن ثرواته الهائلة التي ستفيد البقاء والتقدم.. وأعتقد أن الكتاب سوف يغني القارئ الشغوف لمعرفة صور وأشكال الحياة في الماء، عن البحث المجهد والطويل في الكتب والمجلات.
