يضم هذا الكتاب حكايات كتاب "كليلة ودمنة" الذي ألّفه الفيلسوف الهندي "بيديا" بعدما عيّنه الملك الظالم دبشليم وزيراً للبلاد بعد أن أدرك خطأه و أنّ "بيديا" صدقه النصيحة، وصارحه بالحقيقة التي لا تحتمل الرياء. فطلب منه الملك دبشليم أن يصنع له كتاباً يجمع فيه ضروب الحكمة يورّثه للملوك من بعده، ويكون نبراساً في الحكم وجودة العقل، وليكن مشتملاً على الجدّ والهزل، واللهو والحكمة. فعمل الفيلسوف على كتابه "كليلة ودمنة" وضمّنه الكثير من القصص التي تجري على لسان الطير والحيوان، وتحمل المعاني، وتسكنها الحكمة، وتملؤها الأمثال، فجمع بين الجدّ والهزل.
