لما كان تحقيق صفة الخاتمية والخلود لا يتأتى إلا بالإجتهاد والنظر في تخليص النص من قيد الزمان والمكان والمناسبة، وإستنباط أحكام النوازل منه لتقويم الواقع ومعالجة مشكلاته وقضاياه في كل زمان ومكان وكل الأحوال، وإستشراف المستقبل من خلال إستحضار الماضي، وكان المقصود بـ "الماضي"، كل ما وصلت إليه جهود العلماء المتقدمين من أسلافنا الصالحين بإستفراغهم لجهودهم وبذلهم قصارى وسعهم، في وضع قواعد ومبادئ تضبط بها عمليات النظر للتوصل إلى أحكام لوقائعهم ومستجداتهم التي تعاقبت عليهم حتى حركت فيهم شعوراً بمحدودية ظواهر النصوص وأحكام الوقائع الخاصة من إستيعاب كل ما يطرأ ويجِدُّ في حياتهم من حواد ونوازل، وكان الإجتهاد في فهم طرقهم ومنهجهم في الإجتهاد هو السبيل للخروج مما يحيرنا كما خرجوا من حيرتهم، اكتسى هذا الموضوع أهمية لا تخفى، لإرتباطه بفكر أصولي فذ من السلف الصالح، سجل حضوره بقوة في الساحة الفكرية، مجدداً لا مقلداً، مبدعاً لا مبتدعاً، مبتكراً لا مستهلكاً، إذ مثل "نموذجاً فريداً في تاريخ الحضارة الإنسانية، لأنه شخصية تجاوزت مكانتها حدود عالم الإسلام، إذ لم يكن أثره قوياً في عصره فقط، وإنما امتد عبر القرون"، فكان بحق حجة الإسلام ومجدد المائة الخامسة، ونظراً لأهمية المنهج، ناهيك عن أهمية علم أصول الفقه، يمكن القول أن الإمام الغزالي قد ألف المستصفى بطريقة مختلفة تماماً، وبمنهج غير مسبوق، فخرج بتأليفه هذا عن المألوف، وزاد عن المعروف، ذلك أن المستصفى "يمثل نقطة الإستقرار لكل من المضمون والترتيب في مجال أصول الفقه"، فلم يكن "ممن يقف على ساحله، أو يكتفي بظاهره، بل خاض غماره واقتحم لجته، فسبر أغواره ووقف على حقيقته، وكان واحداً من أربعة عليهم يقوم الأصول، وإليهم ترجع معظم مصنفاته التي شاعت وذاعت"، حتى إن ابن خلدون قال: "وكان من أحسن ما كتب فيه المتكلمون: كتاب البرهان لإمام الحرمين، والمستصفى للغزالي، وهما من الأشعرية، وكتاب العمد لعبد الجبار وشرحه المعتمد لأبي الحسين البصري من المعتزلة، وكانت الأربعة قواعد هذا الفن وأركانه".
