The two plays presented here, Long is the Night and The Gravedigger, are written by the Emirati playwright and poet Mohammad Saeed AL Dhahani.
He is distinguished voice not only among the modern and contemporary playwright in the UAE but also in the Gulf region and the rest of the Arab world. Long is the Night has won several awards, including the best scenario in the 11th Sharjah Theatrical Days 2001. In the same year it also won two prizes in the 10th Carthage Theatre Festival 2001. As for the Gravedigger, it won the best playwright award in 2002 during the Sharjah Theatrical Days.
The celebration of AL Dhanhani’s plays stems from the fact that he deals with contemporary issues that trouble and disturb people of his own generation and the rising generation of the Gulf people in general. With the incredible speed of modernization and urbanization in the Gulf, many people find themselves torn traditions that are fast eroding and disappearing from everyday life. The new- found wealth, together with the menaces that come with urban life, have found their roots in the once simple and conservative families of Emirati society on one hand, and in the Arab world on the other. Families find themselves torn and the young generation in practiculair feel lost and unable to identify with those around them to gain a sense of belonging and security.
What makes AL Dhanhani’s plays special in his ability io mix these themes with those of everyday struggles between issues of femininity and masculinity, poverty and wealth, love and loneliness. His plots are always direct and seemingly straightforward but once the dialogue starts, the menacing inner self and the ,modern world start to erupt. There is a subtle sense of wit and humour that give his plays a light-hearted lift in dealing with weighty and difficult themes. There is no doubt that AL Dhanhani has the making of an important voice among cimtemporary playwrights. His philosophical and epistemological probing reflects dilemmas facing every modern human being, and give his plays a universal voice.
