في روايتها «فجرٌ عربي» تُيمِّم الكاتبة "خولة ناصر المقاطي" شطر الماضي البعيد، العصر الجاهلي، متّخذة إياه زمناً لروايتها، كما تتخذ من وقائع العرب الأولى وحروبهم وغزواتهم فضاءً للروي، فأرادتها تاريخاً روائياً لظاهرة الثأر والوأد التي ألفتها منطقة الجزيرة العربية التي سادت قبل بزوغ فجر الإسلام.
وكان لدى الكاتبة خولة ناصر المقاطي ميزة تفكيك هذا الانغلاق التاريخي، وتحليل طبقات الوعي الذي غلّف المجتمع القبلي، بمعالجة فنية متمايزة تجعل القارئ يعيش أحداث عصر مضى بكل مكوناته المادية: المكان والزمان والشخصيات، وبذلك تكون الكاتبة قدمت نصاً تاريخياً – معرفيا؛ً لتحصد محفزات وجوده كنص قرائي.
تدور أحداث الرواية في قرية صغيرة جانبت كثيراً صراعات العرب وعُرفت بسلمها وهوادة معيشتها، كانت قبيلة "بنو الربيع" تتوسط الصحراء بمكان فريد لا يُجاورها إلا قلة من العرب. في تلك القرية ولدت زهراء ابناً نذرته للعرب، علّه يُوحّد الكلمة عند افتراقها ويلملم الشتات، كبر "عماراً" وكان كما أرادت له والدته، رجلاً شجاعاً ومقداماً. تتوالى الأحداث في الرواية وتغزو قبيلة "بني غراب" ديار "بني ليث" التي ينتمي إليها عمار بن مالك؛ فقتلوا ونهبوا وسبوا ذراريهم من النساء. فاجتمعت قبيلة "بني ليث" لتمحو العار الذي لحق بها وسارت باتجاه "بني عراب" لإعادة الأسيرات، وبعد مفاوضات دارت بين القبيلتين، اشترط كبير "بني غراب" أن تُخيّر الأسيرة بين واليها وسابيها، فوافقت النسوة على العودة مع الأهل إلا "لبابة" ابنة "قيس" وهو من كبار قومه، فقد فضّلت الفتاة آسرها على والدها لقسوته. ومنذ تلك اللحظة قرر "قيس" الانتقام والثأر وحرض قبيلته على وأد بناتهن صغاراً حتى لا يجلبن العار للقبيلة، وبدأ بحفر قبورٍ تتسع لإناث القبيلة، وأول الضحايا كانت صغيرته ذات الثلاثة أعوام. ومن حُزن الأم آسيا على ابنتها لحقتها وماتت بقربها، الشيء الذي جعل قيساً يغادر الديار هائماً إلى غير رجعة... وبعد طول سنين وبحث عن "قيس"، يعثر عماراً على صديقه النادم على فعلته... فيعود به إلى ديار بني ليث ولسان حاله يقول له: "أتعلم يا قيس أن العرب تقول: لا وفاء لمن لا يحن إلى أرضه، ولا يتوق إلى عصبته، ولا يبكي على ما تبدد من زمانه..".
