تتألف محاورات هوايتهد من ثلاثة وأربعين حديثا دارت في بيته بينه وبين طلابه وأصدقاءه فى الأمسيات التى كان يخصصها لمثل تلك الاجتماعات، وهو أستاذ بجامعة هارفارد بالولايات المتحدة. وكان من هؤلاء الأصدقاء صحفى أديب هو "لوسيان برايس"، فكان - بحكم حرفة الصحافة - يسجل لنفسه تلك الأحاديث كما كانت تقع، حتى اجتمعت له منها مجموعة، فاختار منها ثلاثة وأربعين حديثا، أولها حديث السادس من أبريل عام 1934، وآخرها حديث الحادى عشر من نوفمبر عام 1947.
ولقد شهد هوايتهد فى مواضع كثيرة بما هو مدين به فى حياته الفكرية لمحاوراته مع أصدقائه، فمما قاله فى ذلك أن الشطر الأعظم من نموه العقلي قد جاءه من جيد الحديث، وكثيرا ما أسعفه الحظ فى أن يهيئ له المحدث الممتاز، وكذلك يقول فى موضع آخر إنه يؤمن إيماناً شديداً بقيمة المحاورة والمحادثة فى التثقيف، حتى ليعترف بأن ما كسبه منها لا يقل عما كسبه من الكتب، وفى هذا الكتاب الذى نقدمه للقراء، صورة لهذا المحدث البارع في حديثه المنساب، في بيته وبين أصدقائه.
