كتاب استحضار الماضي يقيم صلة في نظام الخلق بين جزيئات الخلايا الحية والمجرات السماوية، وبين الكائنات الحية البدائية والمجتمعات الإنسانية، وتخلص فكرة المؤلف في أن الكائنات هي وحدات للشكل، أي أن كل كائن حي يمثل وحدة يسميها وحدة الشكل، وفي هذا المجال تتراكم التجارب أو الأفكار أو الذكريات، أو جميعها معاً، ويعتريها التطور، وتنتقل من خلال مجالات شكلها في الماضي إلى مجالات شكل حديثة وذلك عندما يختفي الشكل- أي هيكل أي كائن- ويبقى مجال شكله الذي يستمر فيظهر في شكل آخر يكونه، أو ينتقل إلى مكان آخر في زمن جديد، وفي صورة جديدة. وعندما يعاود مجال الشكل الظهور أو التأثير، فإنه يكون شكلاً جديداً يحمل معه ذكريات وخبرات وذاكرة الماضي. ومن خلال ذلك يحدث التوارث في العادات والسلوكيات، متطورة أو متوافقة مع بيئتها الجديدة في الزمان والمكان. إن فرضية "شيلدريك" التي تتسم بالجرأة والوضوح والقطعية، تشكل تحدياً جارفاً للأسس العلمية الراسخة، وهي قد تثير الغضب أو الرضا ولكنها بالتأكيد تثير الإنتباه.
