يتبنى هذا الكتاب نظرة مختلفة لثورة 1919 . حيث يكشف أنها ليست ثورة واحدة و إنما ثورتان : ثورة " وطنية وديموقراطية " قام بها أفندية المدن والأخرى " إجتماعية " خاض غمارها الفلاحون في الريف . كما يحلل تناقضاتها وطابعها المركب , وكيف أتخذت مسارات مختلفة , بل وكيف تصارعت الثورتان في بعض الأحيان .
كما يشتمل على تحليل مدقق للتحولات التي جرت في الريف المصري , وتغير نمط الإنتاج الزراعي إثر دخول زراعة القطن , والتحول من الإنتاج الموجه للإستهلاك المعيشي إلى الإنتاج الموجه للسوق العالمي . ويستعرض المقاومة الفلاحية لهذه التحولات , وسيطرة الحركات المهدوية عليها , أي الحركات القائمة على وجود مهدي منتظر .
إن هذا الكتاب يعيد بناء أحداث ثورة 1919 , ووصفها من وجهة نظر الفاعلين فيها . ويقوض مخيلتنا عنها , التي صنعتها المواد السينمائية والتليفزيونية , وغذتها المرويات والدراسات التاريخية عن الوفد والمفاوضات وصراعات النخب . فهي ثورة حدثت بالأساس في الريف , وكانت جماهير الفلاحين المصريين وقودها الحي ..ثورة في مواجهة سيطرة المدينة على الريف .
