يقول الكاتب فى مقدمة كتابه ” الفرض الذى أمتحنه فى هذا البحث هو أن الشعر الذى أطلق عليه مصطلح الشعر الحر يعد امتداداً للشعر العربى الذى أطلق عليه حديثا الشعر التقليدى أو الشعر العمودى وقد فرض عليه هذا الوصف فى مقابل الشعر الحر. والذى يعنيه الكاتب بذلك أن الشعر الحر يسلك مسلكاً مماثلاً له من حيث مسالكه اللغوية ، ويحتاج إلى ما يحتاج إليه سالفه من بعض الاستعمالات الخاصة التى وصفت قديما بانها ضرورة فيه ، فلا يزال بعض الباحثين – وبخاصة من يرفضون الشعر الحر – يعتقدون أن الشعر الحر قد تحر من كل شئ حتى الوزن ،بل إن بعض المتخصصين يرون ذلك ، ويطلقون عليه تهكماً به “الشعر السايب” متناسين انهم يطلقون عليه لفظ “الشعر” على كل حال.
