فإنَّ كلَّ أُمًّةٍ منَ الأُمم لا تعيش حاضِرَها، وتعرفُ حضارَتَها إلا إذا ارتبطت بتاريخها، وأحاطَتْه بعنايتها، وإنَّ معرفةَ تاريخ المغرب لَمَوضوعٌ ذو بال، نظراً لِعَراقتِه وأصالته، وثراءِ مادَّته، وخاصةً تاريخه الإسلامي، ولهذا نجد علماء الإسلام فضلاً عن غيرهم قد اهتمُّوا به وأشادوا به، وخلَّفوا دواوين في ذلك ما بين مُسْهِبٍ ومختصِر، وبين عامٍّ ومخصِّصه ومقيّد، وأقصدُ بالعامِّ التاريخَ الكاملَ للقُطر المغربي من أدناه إلى أقصاه مع ضَمِّ الأندلس إليه، وأقصدُ بالمُقيد الكتابَ الذي نحى فيه مؤلفُه تأَريخ مدينة يعينها؛ مبرزاً اسمَها وتاريخَ نشأتها وبنائِها، ومُبيِّناً عُمرانَها ووُلاتَها، وقُضاتَها وعُلماءَها، وذاكراً نشاطها العلميَّ والإقتصاديَّ وغيرها من الضروب والفنون...
ومن هذا النوع الأخير، اهتمَّ العلماء والمؤرخون بمدينة سبتة الإسلامية المغربية.
