من بين الظواهر الاقتصادية التي ميزت العالم في الجزء الأخير من القرن الماضي، انتشار التكتلات الاقتصادية على مستوى الدول أو على مستوى الشركات، وهذا الانتشار ازداد مع مطلع القرن الواحد والعشرين، مما جعل الكثير يصفون هذا القرن بأنه قرن التكتلات الاقتصادية، حيث أخذت هذه التكتلات في الغالب شكل مجمعات اقتصادية تتكون من عدة شركات اجتمعت إما بالاندماج أو بالإنشاء حيث تسمح بتفريع نشاطها أو تنوعه أو تخصص الشركات، هذا ما أدى إلى ظهور العديد من القضايا والمشاكل المحاسبية، وازدادت أهمية وحدة هذه المشاكل بعد أن انتقل اهتمام الشركات من تكوين المجمعات على المستوى الوطني إلى تكوين المجمعات على المستوى الدولي، وذلك بحثا عن إنشاء كيانات اقتصادية قادرة على المنافسة الشديدة في الاقتصاد العالمي مفتوح يتسم بالعولمة وتحرير التجارة الخارجية. في ظل ما يشهده العالم الآن من أحداث متلاحقة فيما يمكن أن نطلق عليه "ثورة الاقتصاد العالمي" نظرا لانحصار أدوار الحكومات، وزيادة التدفقات الرأسمالية والمد التجاري العالمي والتطور الهائل في تكنولوجيا المعلومات والعولمة، أصبح توجه الشركات ذات الصناعات الوحيدة نحو التكتل والاندماج متزايداً، ربما كي تستطيع هذه الأخيرة مواكبة التغيرات التي يتعين التعامل معها وكذا مواجهة الشركات القوية المنافسة لها لضمان مراقبة الموارد العالمية لصالحها.
