وضع المؤرّخ العلاّمة الهندي "تارا تشاند" كتاب أثر الإسلام في الثقافة الهندية في الربع الأول من القرن العشرين لدراسة التأثير الذي أحدثه الإسلام والمسلمون في مختلف مجالات الثقافة الهندية.
كُنُزٌ هم المؤرّخون، هنوداً وعرباً وغربيّين، الذين درسوا العلاقة بين الإسلام والديانات الهندية، ولكن من منظور غلبت فيه الإيديولوجيا على البحث العلمي، فجاءت دارساتهم أكثر إنحيازاً إلى هذا الطرف أو ذاك، أما "تارا تشاند"، وهو هندوسي خبير بالديانات الهندية، فقد درس تلك العلاقة برحابة صدر وإتساع عقل وشمول معرفة.
تُرجِم الكتاب من اللغة الأرديّة إلى لغات كثيرة أخرى، ومؤسّسة الفكر العربي بدورها ترجمته إلى العربية ضمن سلسلة "حضارة واحدة"، والمترجم هو الأستاذ الهندي الدكتور محمد أيوب الندوي الضليع باللغة والثقافة العربيّتين، فهو يرأس قسم اللغة العربية وآدابها في الجامعة الملّية الإسلامية، في نيودلهي، أما مُراجِع الترجمة فهو الأستاذ الهندي الدكتور زبير أحمد الفاروقي، رئيس تحرير مجلة "ثقافة الهند" سابقاً.
وسيجد المؤرّخ العربيّ، كما القارئ العربيّ، فائدةً كبرى في مطالعة هذا الكتاب بفضل المعلومات الغنيّة والدقيقة التي يقدّمها مؤلّفه، وبفضل المراجع الغزيرة التي اعتمدها وهي تعود إلى مؤرّخين ثقة عرباً وأجانب.
